Kirk Michael Knuffke (* 1980 in Denver ) is an American jazz trumpeter and cornet player .

Life

Knuffke grew up in Colorado and has lived in New York City since 2005 . There he studied improvisation with Ornette Coleman , Art Lande and Ron Miles . Since then he has released a number of albums under his own name for the label Clead Feed , No Business and - together with the pianist Jesse Stacken - for SteepleChase Records , including an album with compositions by Charles Mingus . He has also worked with Matt Wilson / Mary Halvorson , Butch Morris , the Andrew D'Angelo Big Band, Josh Rosemans Extended Constellations , Jeff Davis , Federico Ughi , Lisle Ellis , in the Ideal Bread quartet and in Kenny Wollesen's formation Wollesonic . In Europe he performed a. a. appearing at festivals in Saalfelden , Willisau and the North Sea Jazz Festival . Knuffke counts Lester Bowie's playing and the compositional work of Steve Lacy to be among his influences . He performed at the 2014 SWR NEWJazz Meeting with Melissa Aldana , Jakob Bro , Joe Martin , Jacob Sacks and RJ Miller .

In 2015 he won the Down Beat Critic Polls in the Rising Star category.
