Matt Wilson (born September 27, 1964 in Knoxville , Illinois ) is an American jazz musician ( drums , composition ) and band leader.

Live and act

Wilson studied drums and percussion at Wichita State University and worked in his native Midwest as a teacher and freelancer. In 1987 he moved to Boston , where he played in the Either / Orchestra and the Charlie Kohlhase Quartet, and finally to New York City in 1992 , where he was part of the avant-garde scene in downtown a. a. played with Dewey Redman and Cecil McBee . He is part of the "Jazz Composers Collective" (including Ted Nash , Ben Allison , Frank Kimbrough ) and played regularly at their annual "Collective Festival" in the "Jazz Standard Club". He was also on Allison and Kimbrough's Herbie Nichols Project . He also worked with Billie Mays , Andrew Hill , Ray Anderson , Buster Williams , Jane Ira Bloom , Fred Hersch , Bob Bowen , Denny Zeitlin, and toured with Charlie Haden and Lee Konitz .

In 1996 he founded his “Matt Wilson Quartet” with the saxophonists Andrew D'Angelo (alto saxophone, bass clarinet) and Jeff Lederer (tenor saxophone, clarinet) and the bassist Yosuke Inoue . Wilson toured with the band “Arts and Crafts”, which he founded in 2000, with trumpeter (and flugelhorn) Terrell Stafford , organist (Hammond organ, also piano, accordion) Gary Versace and bassist (also clarinet) Dennis “d big head “Irwin . He worked on a composition based on poems by Carl Sandburg , who like him comes from Illinois and whose poems he also recited during performances.

Wilson teaches with his quartet at "educational workshops" in schools and universities (also for children) and is working on a book about improvisation (2008). He writes regularly for Modern Drummer Magazine.

Wilson has released several albums on Palmetto Records such as "As Wave Follows Wave" 1996 (with Dewey Redman and Cecil McBee, his debut album), "Going Once, Going Twice" 1998, "Smile" 1999, "Arts and Crafts" 2001, " Wake up! (To whats happening) ”2004,“ The Scenic Route ”2007 and 2016 Beginning of a Memory . In 2007 he presented himself at the JazzFest Berlin . He also played at the Newport Jazz Festival and was Artist in Residence at the 2006 Juneau , Alaska Classical and Jazz Festival . He also performed with David Tronzo , Mario Pavone and Tom Varner and worked in the bands of Michael Blake , Dena DeRose and Frank Kimbrough. Prizes and awards

In 2004 he was nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association as "Drummer of the Year" and also as "Artist deserving against recognition" at the Bird Award . In 2003, 2004 and 2005 he was "Rising Star Drummer of the Year" in the Critics Polls on Down Beat . His “Arts and Crafts” was voted one of the “Top acoustic groups” at Down Beat in 2005. In 2004 he won the Readers Poll for "Modern Drummer Magazine".
