Charlie Kohlhase

Charlie Kohlhase (born November 28, 1956 in Portsmouth , New Hampshire ) is an American jazz saxophonist.

Kohlhase started playing the saxophone at the age of 18 . After taking private lessons with Stan Strickland and Roswell Rudd , he went to Boston in 1980. Here he has been leading his own groups since 1982. In 1987 he founded the Charlie Kohlhase Quintet with saxophonist Matt Langley , trombonist Curtis Hasselbring (who was succeeded by John Carlson after his departure in 1992 ), bassist John Turner and drummer Matt Wilson .

Kohlhase also leads the quintet CK5 , the quintet Explorer's Club with Matt Langley and the Saxophone Support Group . He was or is a member of the Nate McBride Quartet , Matt Steckler's Dead Cat Bounce and Chris Allen's Central Artery Project , performed with the group The Estate and the Chuck Gabriel Septet and formed a saxophone duo with Matt Langley.

From 1988 to 2001 he was a member of the Either / Orchestra . In 1997, 1998 and 2003 he toured New England as a co-leader with the Danish saxophonist John Tchicai . In 2003 he was artist in residence with Dave Douglas and Roswell Rudd at Harvard University . In the same year he participated in Anthony Braxton's Genome Project , worked with the composer Leroy Jenkins at the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art and toured in a trio with John Tchicai and Garrison Fewell .
