Dave Douglas
David Deuel "Dave" Douglas (* 24. March 1963 in Montclair , New Jersey ) is an American jazz - trumpet player and composer .
Live and act
Douglas grew up in New Jersey and learned the piano , trombone and trumpet as a child . He studied music in Barcelona and Boston , then at Berklee College of Music and at the New England Conservatory . In 1984 he moved to New York, where he studied at New York University. In 1987 he made his first European tour with Horace Silver . Together with Michael Jefry Stevens , he directed the Mosaic Sextet between 1988 and 1990 , whose album Today, this Moment ( Konnex Records / GM Recordings ) is now one of the classics of the genre.
Since 1993 Douglas has recorded more than 20 own albums. He has worked with numerous musicians, including in particular with John Zorn in his Masada project as well as with Horace Silver , Jack McDuff , the SFJazz Collective and accordionist Guy Klucevsek . In his compositions he uses material from musicians such as Duke Ellington , Thelonious Monk , Roland Kirk and Kurt Weill , but also elements of Eastern European folklore. He has recorded several albums that he sees as a tribute to Booker Little , Mary Lou Williams ( Soul on Soul ) and others. On more recent recordings, there is a clear reference to the fusion music of the early 1970s, for example by Miles Davis . Dave Douglas also includes electronic instruments in his music. Due to his broad musical spectrum, which he is constantly expanding, he is one of the most innovative jazz trumpeters in the USA today.
He has already been awarded the National Endowment Jazz Fellowships twice. His album Charmes of the Night Sky received the 1999 German Record Critics' Prize .
In 2005 Douglas ended the record deal with RCA-Bluebird and founded his own record label Greenleaf Music together with Mike Friedman .
