Soul on Soul is a jazz album by Dave Douglas , recorded in 1999 at Avatar Studios, New York City and released on RCA in 2000 .
The album
Soul on Soul is the fourteenth album by trumpeter and band leader Dave Douglas and the first for a larger label. Douglas recorded Soul on Soul with a sextet with whom he has worked since 1994. At that time he recorded the album In Our Lifetime as a tribute to hardbop trumpeter Booker Little . All other projects with the sextet were each dedicated to a jazz musician, including Soul on Soul . This album was dedicated to the music of jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams .
Of the thirteen songs on Soul on Soul , only four are from Mary Lou Williams: "Aries", "Mary's Idea" from the Zodiac Suite, and "Waltz Boogie" and "Play It Momma". The remaining compositions are from the pen of Dave Douglas, who paraphrased the musical ideas of the pianist in the way “by filtering out the elements that correspond to his sensibilities. In this way he rediscovers her work, gives it freshness and originality and creates compositions for today's musicians ”.
In addition to the bandleader, Douglas' sextet consisted of Chris Speed (clarinet and tenor saxophone), Greg Tardy (clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone), Joshua Roseman (trombone), Uri Caine (piano), James Genus (bass) and Joey Baron ( Drums).
On the album, recorded in New York in 1999, the piano playing of Mary Lou Williams plays only a minor role, apart from "Canticle". So it is a homage in a broad sense. The sextet did not venture into the masses and cantatas of the devout Catholic - even if “Canticle” and “Kyrie”, composed by Douglas, are an approximation of Mary Lou Williams' spirituality.

Reception of the album
The All Music Guide rated Soul on Soul with the highest grade; the critics Richard Cook and Brian Morton in their Penguin Guide to Jazz with the second highest rating; the factor that holds the record together is Douglas' intelligent, soulful playing and his ability to form bands that can give the impression of a bigger idea without sounding pretentious or forced.
The critic Marcus A. Woelfle wrote in the music magazine Rondo that the album was a "magnificent monument" for "the most important and yet almost forgotten jazz instrumentalist and composer of her generation". It is a "blessing that the varied tribute of the trumpeter Dave Douglas has turned out so refreshingly unmusical and personal." With the pieces composed "in a kind of soul brotherhood", Dave Douglas has settled as a "clever postmodernist in all style corners at the same time." Woefle also emphasizes the sound spectrum of Douglas' trumpet playing, whose “sound palette ranges from the dark rumble to the swinging beacon, from the cloudy to the sharp outlines”.
In addition to the formation's concert in Winterthur, which took place shortly after the album was released, Woefle wrote, "The six walked effortlessly between instruction and improvisation, technical brilliance and empathy - and always remained in the service of overall expression."
