Gregory "Greg" Tardy (born February 3, 1966 in New Orleans ) is an American jazz musician ( bass clarinet , tenor saxophone ).

Live and act

Gregory Tardy first studied classical clarinet playing and then learned the saxophone by himself while playing in funk bands in Milwaukee . Under the influence of the music of John Coltrane , he decided to become a professional jazz musician; he then moved to St. Louis , where he played in local jazz and blues bands , and then went back to his hometown of New Orleans to continue studying. There he played with the local brass bands and performed a. a. up with the Neville Brothers ; he also worked there with Nicholas Payton , Jason and Ellis Marsalis . In 1992 Tardy recorded his first album under his own name, Crazy Love , on which his mother Joanne Tardy was also a guest vocalist. In the same year he became a member of the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine . During this time he moved to New York City, where he also worked with Wynton Marsalis , Jay McShann , Steve Coleman , Betty Carter , James Moody , Bill Frisell , Rashied Ali and John Patitucci .

He became known in the second half of the 1990s through his membership in the bands of Tom Harrell ( The Art of Rhythm , 1997), Andrew Hill ( Dusk ), Dave Douglas ( Soul on Soul ) and Russell Gunn . Tom Harrell and Russell Gunn as well as Mulgrew Miller and Eric Harland also contributed to Tardy's album Serendipity , released in 1997 on Impulse! Records was born and for which he was awarded the New York Jazz Award for Best Debut Artist .
In 2001 the album Abundance was released on Palmetto , on which the pianist George Colligan and Miguel Zenón participated. In the 2000s, Tardy also worked with Omer Avital , Alex Norris , Steve Swallow ( L'Histoire du Clochard ), Craig Brann and John Zorn ( The Unknown Masada , 2003) and in the New Jazz Composers Octet by trumpeter David Weiss . In March 2005 he recorded the album The Truth for Steeplechase , u. a. with trumpeter Marcus Printup and pianist Helen Sung . The Strongest Love (2009) with Joel Weiskopf and Jaimeo Brown appeared on the same label . In addition to his activities as a musician, Tardy also works as a music teacher.
