George Colligan

George Colligan (born December 29, 1969 in New Jersey ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , organ , keyboard , trumpet and drums ), band leader, composer and teacher.

George Colligan grew up in Columbia, Maryland , a suburb of Baltimore . He studied classical trumpet playing and music education at the Peabody Institute . During his high school years he also played drums, but then switched to the piano as the main instrument.

As a sought-after session musician, he worked with musicians like Dave Ballou , Gary Bartz , Don Byron , Johannes Enders , Robin Eubanks , Benny Golson , Eddie Henderson , Billy Higgins , Lee Konitz , Nicholas Payton , Rich Perry , Lonnie Plaxico , Marcus Printup in the 1990s , Steve Wilson , Cassandra Wilson , Phil Woods, and the Mingus Dynasty ; he also accompanied the singers Vanessa Rubin and Kellylee Evans ; He was part of the band of Gary Thomas for a while, in the 2000s still with Gregory Tardy and Buster Williams ( Griot Liberté ).

Since 1995 he has recorded a number of albums under his own name for the SteepleChase , Fresh Sound and CrissCross labels . a. Drew Gress , Billy Hart , Ingrid Jensen , Ralph Peterson , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Gary Thomas, Mark Turner participated. He also played a solo album ( Small Room , 1999) and two duo albums with bassist Jesper Bodilsen ( Twins and A Wish ) in 2000/01 . From 2004 he worked in fusion style with Billy Kilson's BK Groove.

Colligan lives in New York and teaches at the Juilliard School of Music . In his eclectic style , he processes influences from funk , free improvisation to contemporary music . He counts Chick Corea , Miles Davis , Herbie Hancock , Thelonious Monk , Wayne Shorter and McCoy Tyner among his influences.

Prizes and awards

Colligan was awarded the Chamber Music America for composition and is also the winner of the Jazzconnect.com award .
