Marcus Printup (born January 24, 1967 in Conyers , Georgia ) is an American jazz trumpeter .

Live and act

Printup gained early musical experience in the choir of the local Baptist congregation led by his parents and its accompanying ensemble. He first studied concert trumpet at Georgia State University , then jazz at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. In 1989 he went on tour with the Disney All-American Marching Band . Already in the final stages of his studies he received prestigious prizes, such as the outstanding soloist in the Collegiate Jazz Competition in 1990 and the Thelonious Monk Competition in 1991 . In 1992 he toured with Marcus Roberts . This was followed by recordings with Carl Allen and tours with Betty Carter .

In 1994 he became a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra , with whom he has since toured internationally. In addition, Printup also worked with his own groups, with whom he recorded his own highly regarded albums Song for the Beautiful Woman (1994), Unveiled (1996), Nocturnal Traces (1998) and New Boogaloo (2002). Further albums of his own followed. With Tim Hagans as partner and Freddie Hubbard as mentor and producer, he recorded the Freddie Hubbard Hommage Hubsongs (with Benny Green , Peter Washington and Kenny Washington ) in 1998 . He can also be heard on albums by Madeleine Peyroux , Cyrus Chestnut , Wycliffe Gordon , Dianne Reeves , Wynton Marsalis , Diane Schuur and Eric Reed .

His birthplace celebrated a Marcus Printup Day in 2005 . Printup is married to the harpist Riza Printup (* 1972).
