Madeleine Peyroux (* 18th April 1974 in Athens , Georgia ) is an American song - jazz - singer and songwriter .

life and career

Madeleine Peyroux lived in Georgia as a toddler . Her parents, who were looking for work, moved her to New York City when she was six. She grew up and went to school in the Brooklyn neighborhood and later in southern California . When her mother divorced her father, she took her daughter to Paris .

Around 1990 Peyroux was active as a street musician in Paris Metro passages , which, like in New York City, is a recognized way of making a living as a bohemian . She then went on tours with the Lost Wandering Blues & Jazz Band for years . In 1996 she was hired by a manager of the Atlantic Records label as a soloist for a recording contract. The Dreamland album earned her a lot of recognition and attention. She didn't like the loss of privacy. So she avoided the public. There is an anecdote that her record company hired a private detective in August 2005 because of a missed media appointment, who found her with her manager.
