Conyers is a city and also the county seat of Rockdale County in the US state of Georgia with 15,195 inhabitants (as of 2010).

history

Conyers town center

The first known settler of Conyers was John Holcomb. When the railway reached Conyers, he was supposed to give up land in the course of the construction of the line, against which he initially protested. Ultimately, however, he sold his land to banker WD Conyers for 700 US dollars . In 1845 the Atlanta – Augusta railway was put into operation. In 1854 the previous settlement was given town status and the name Conyers .

The city was ravaged by fires at least three times. In 1864 she also suffered from William T. Sherman's March to the Sea during the American Civil War . In 1870 Rockdale County was founded and Conyers was declared its administrative seat.

In 1944 the Trappist Abbey of Conyers was founded.

29.9% of the population identified themselves as whites , 56.6% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 1.4% as Asian Americans . 9.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.3% to several ethnic groups. 16.3% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .

The average annual income per household was 39,885 USD , while 31.0% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Conyers is crossed by Interstate 20 , US Highway 278, and Georgia State Routes 20 and 138 . The nearest airport is Atlanta Airport (around 40 km west). The rail line through Conyers is now served by CSX Transportation in freight traffic.

The crime rate in 2010 was 552 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were four murders, two rapes, 34 robberies, 34 assaults, 205 break-ins, 757 thefts, 58 car thefts and two arson attacks.
