Mathis grew up in Conyers, Georgia . In his youth he played for the Rockdale Youth Soccer Association and then for AFC Lightning, a club based in Fayetteville . He was also active on the school team for his high school.
He then played college soccer at the University of South Carolina and was drafted sixth overall by Los Angeles Galaxy in the first round of the 1998 MLS College Draft. He received his first calling for the US national team on November 6, 1998 against Australia.
Midfielder Clint Mathis began his professional career at Los Angeles Galaxy and moved to New Jersey Metro Stars in 2000 . He played a convincing soccer World Cup in 2002 , where he reached the quarterfinals with his team and was eliminated against Germany .
After the 2002 World Cup, Mathis was associated with various German clubs, in particular with FC Bayern Munich . Nevertheless, he only moved to the Bundesliga for Hannover 96 in 2004 . In the second half of the 2003/04 season , the striker scored 4 Bundesliga goals in 16 games for Hannover. He did not succeed in the following season, however, to remain a regular player. He also fell out of favor with coach Ewald Lienen . In this context, his goal celebration about his goal to 1-0 against FC Schalke 04 on September 25, 2004 received a lot of attention : Mathis made angry gestures and a finger pointing towards Lienen to his frustration over his being a reservist and his late substitution in this game loud air. He also grabbed his genitals. In December 2004 his contract was terminated.
For the 2005 season he returned to Major League Soccer in his homeland. In the USA he played for Real Salt Lake , Colorado Rapids , New York Red Bulls and Los Angeles Galaxy. At Galaxy, however, he played a total of two months and only took part in test matches. In the other three teams he was part of the team.
In January 2008 Mathis moved to the Greek first division club Lyttos Ergotelis . At the end of the 2008/2009 season, he moved back to Real Salt Lake, for whom he played in 2005, in August.
On August 4, 2010, Clint Mathis announced his retirement due to numerous injuries.
