First in the 2003/04 season, the Bundesliga and thus German champion was Werder Bremen who also and the addition DFB Cup and thus the double won league and cup. The season began on August 1, 2003 with FC Bayern Munich's game against Eintracht Frankfurt and ended on May 22, 2004.
Season overview
Under Thomas Schaaf, Werder Bremen became German champions with six points ahead of FC Bayern Munich . While in the first half of the season it looked like four championship candidates - Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart , Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FC Bayern Munich - who clearly stood out from the rest of the league, Werder Bremen sat down - thanks to a series of 23 games without defeat in a row - after the winter break from the competition and could not be caught. Werder Bremen secured the championship on matchday 32 with a sovereign 3-1 win against their direct competitor and pursuer Bayern Munich.
Bremen scored the most goals in the league and provided the top scorer and footballer of the year with Aílton and the best storm with him and Ivan Klasnić (13 goals, 11 preparations). In midfield, Johan Micoud , Fabian Ernst , Frank Baumann and Krisztián Lisztes or Tim Borowski formed a so-called diamond , which impressed with its fast and safe combination game. The Bremen defense allowed the second fewest goals in the whole league and contributed significantly to the championship.
Further surprises were the good placement and UEFA Cup qualification of VfL Bochum and the poor performance of Hertha BSC , which was initially considered one of the candidates for the Champions League, but had to tremble for a long time about relegation.
11,489,167 spectators (an average of 37,546 per game) visited the stadiums.
