Nelson Antonio Haedo Valdez ( better known in Germany by his second surname Valdez ; born November 28, 1983 in San Joaquín , Caaguazú ) is a Paraguayan football player . He is currently under contract with Club Cerro Porteño and plays for the Paraguayan national team .

Career

Club career

youth

Valdez learned to play football at Atlético Tembetary , for whom he made his debut in Paraguay's first division at the age of 15.

Werder Bremen

After Jürgen L. Born Valdez was recommended in Paraguay and he convinced himself of his qualities on site, he paid him for the plane ticket to Bremen. Valdez moved to Werder Bremen in 2001 at the age of 18 and was first used for the A-youth and later in the Regionalliga Nord for the amateurs. After a few sporadic missions in the 2002/03 season, he was a permanent member of the Bundesliga squad of Werder Bremen in the following season. He signed his first professional contract, which ran until 2007, in October 2003. Valdez was voted third in Paraguay's 2004 soccer player of the year and second in 2005.

Borussia Dortmund

On July 1, 2006, he moved to Borussia Dortmund due to better prospects , because Ivan Klasnić was contesting him for his regular place in Bremen and he was usually only used as a substitute. Valdez signed a four-year contract with BVB until 2010. In his first season (2006/07) for Borussia Dortmund, he only scored his first goal against VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 32 . He scored his second goal for Borussia Dortmund on matchday two of the 2007/08 season in the 1: 4 defeat at FC Schalke 04 . Valdez marked the interim goal to 1: 3 in this game; later he got two more goals this season.

With Borussia Dortmund he reached the DFB Cup final in Berlin on April 19, 2008 , which the team lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich .

After Valdez had shown good performances in parts in his third season for BVB in the second half of the season, his contract was extended early in April 2009 to summer 2012.

Hércules Alicante

In August 2010, Valdez and Hércules Alicante agreed on a three-year contract dated June 30, 2013. The transfer fee was 3.5 million euros, which could be increased to four million euros through additional agreements. In his first game for Alicante on September 11, 2010, Valdez scored both goals for a 2-0 away win at FC Barcelona . With the descent to the Segunda División , he left the club again. In the 2010/11 season he made 25 games for Hércules and scored eight goals.

Rubin Kazan

In August 2011 Valdez moved to the Premjer Liga to Rubin Kazan . He made his first game for his new club on September 10, 2011 in the 1: 3 defeat against FK Krasnodar .

Valencia CF

In August 2012, Valdez moved to Valencia CF on loan with an option to buy for the 2012/13 season . On February 25, 2013, he was finally committed. He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2015.

In the first three competitive games of the 2014/15 season , he was one of the starting XI of Eintracht. On August 30, 2014, the second match day of the season, he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in the 2-2 draw in the away game against VfL Wolfsburg without outside interference and was therefore out of action for at least half a year. On March 14, 2015 he celebrated his return against SC Paderborn , where he came on for Haris Seferović in the 74th minute and scored the goal to make it 4-0. On July 16, 2015, Valdez agreed with the club to terminate the contract.

Seattle Sounders

From August 2015 Valdez was under contract with the Seattle Sounders and won the MLS Cup in 2016 .

In 2002, the then German U-21 national coach Jürgen Kohler intended to win Valdez through naturalization for the German national team and had a corresponding national jersey with the number 11 flocked for Valdez. However, following his mother's advice, Valdez chose Paraguay.

Valdez was nominated for Paraguay's U-20 squad at the 2003 Junior World Cup in the United Arab Emirates . He played in all three group games and scored one goal in the last game in a 2-0 win over Germany , Paraguay finished second . In the round of 16 they lost 1-0 to Spain .

At the World Cup they were eliminated in the group stage after Paraguay had lost 1-0 to England and Sweden ; only the last game against Trinidad and Tobago was won 2-0.

Life

In the picture , Valdez reported in April 2008 about his time as a homeless person, about the fear that his parents might be kidnapped, about the people in his home country and other experiences he had made before his professional career in Germany:

Valdez grew up in the small village of San Joaquín in the Caaguazú department in Paraguay. As a 15-year-old he came to the second division Atlético Tembetary, where his earnings were low. As a homeless person, he spent the night under a grandstand for two years. After the daily soccer game, he regularly consumed Caña, a sugar cane liquor popular in Paraguay , and said he was threatened by alcoholism . This definitely ended when he moved to Werder Bremen . However, he kept in close contact with his homeland and provided financial support to people in need there.

After many years in Germany, Valdez speaks fluent German . Together with his wife, who comes from there, he owns a house in Bremen , but now has the center of his life on Mallorca .

Trivia

Valdez scored the latest goal in the history of the Bundesliga. On August 6, 2004, in the opening game of the 2004/05 season - as usual a game on Friday evening - he scored the 1-0 winner in the 83rd minute for reigning champions Werder Bremen against FC Schalke 04 . As a main cable was damaged during construction work in the area around the Weser Stadium in the run-up to the game, the floodlights went out shortly before the scheduled kick-off at 8:30 p.m., so that the game began with a delay of around 65 minutes at around 9:35 p.m. Due to this late kick-off time, the goal by Valdez fell at around 11:13 p.m., making it the latest goal in Bundesliga history.
