First in the 2002/03 season of the Bundesliga and thus German men's championship was FC Bayern Munich . The season began on August 9, 2002 with the game Borussia Dortmund against Hertha BSC and ended on May 24, 2003.

Season overview

With Michael Ballack and Zé Roberto , two pillars of the successful Bayer 04 Leverkusen team moved to Bayern Munich for the new season , as did Sebastian Deisler . The 40th Bundesliga season was not very spectacular at the top of the table. The German championship was already clear for FC Bayern Munich under coach Ottmar Hitzfeld on matchday 30 . The club ended the season 16 points ahead of VfB Stuttgart, second in the table, at that time the biggest advantage a champion had since the introduction of the three-point rule in 1995. Bayer Leverkusen surprised negatively. In the previous year almost champion, the league could only be achieved on the last match day with a 1-0 in Nuremberg. Before that, curiosities had happened almost every week at Bayer Leverkusen. Coach Thomas Hörster was fired because he no longer believed in relegation after a 4-1 defeat in Hamburg. Udo Lattek was traded as a coach, but did not take up this post for health reasons. Instead, Jürgen Kohler worked as head of sport for a few months, and two game days before the end of the season, Klaus Augenthaler became the new coach after he had been dismissed from relegated Nuremberg a few weeks earlier.

The 1. FC Nuremberg had just as Arminia Bielefeld and Energie Cottbus relegated to the Second Bundesliga. Promoted Hanover was able to assert itself mainly due to a remarkable eight away wins in the league.

The last matchday of the 2002/03 season drew its tension from the fight for second place in the table, which entitled to direct qualification for the Champions League . Borussia Dortmund went into the 34th matchday second with 57 points and had to face relegated Energie Cottbus at home, a supposedly easy task. Third-placed VfB Stuttgart , one point behind Dortmund, also played against VfL Wolfsburg in their own stadium .

In an unspectacular game, VfB Stuttgart won 2-0 against the Wolves . It all came down to the result from Dortmund. In the event of a tie, VfB Stuttgart would move up to second place, and Dortmund would then have to qualify for the Champions League as third. If BVB won, nothing would change in the table.

Everything started as planned in the Westfalenstadion. Dortmund took the lead with a goal from Tomáš Rosický in the 25th minute. Amazingly, FC Energie Cottbus, who had already been relegated at the time, could not be shown and held against it. Dortmund couldn't find a recipe against the Cottbusers, who were in part playfully superior, and kept coming under pressure themselves. In the 74th minute, the Dortmund drama took its course. Cottbus midfielder Timo Rost headed the ball to make it 1-1 into the Dortmund goal. BVB failed to score another goal in the final minutes and ended up third.

VfB moved into the Champions League as runner-up. A successful conclusion to a remarkable career for Krassimir Balakov , who even managed to score one goal in his last competitive game. In addition to Balakow, the former German national players Ulf Kirsten and Michael Preetz also ended their playing careers.
