Michael Frontzeck (born March 26, 1964 in Mönchengladbach ) is a former German soccer player and today's coach .

Career

As a player

Frontzeck was a student at the Odenkirchen grammar school in Mönchengladbach and began his football career at SpVg Odenkirchen . From 1982 to 2000 he played as a left full-back in the Bundesliga for Borussia Mönchengladbach (1982–1989, 1995/96 and 1999–2000), VfB Stuttgart , VfL Bochum and SC Freiburg and played 436 Bundesliga games during this time, in which he scored 37 goals. The greatest success of his career was winning the German championship in the 1991/92 season with VfB Stuttgart. In addition, Frontzeck was in the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons in England with Manchester City under contract and played there in the 1st and 2nd English leagues.

In the national team he had 19 missions between 1984 and 1992 and was with the team at the European football championship in 1992 in Sweden vice-European champion.

As a trainer

After his active career, Frontzeck became Hans Meyer's assistant coach alongside Manfred Stefes at Borussia Mönchengladbach in July 2000 and at the same time completed his football teacher training course in Cologne, which he passed with distinction. Under Meyer's successor Ewald Lienen , he continued his work at Mönchengladbach and was dismissed together with Lienen in September 2003. In spring 2004 Lienen, who had been hired by Hannover 96, hired him for the position of assistant coach. In November 2005 they were released together again.

In the 2006/07 season, Frontzeck succeeded Dieter Hecking as coach of Alemannia Aachen , who had been poached by Hannover 96, after three matchdays . With Alemannia, Frontzeck was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. Immediately after the last game of the season against Hamburger SV , he resigned as coach on May 19, 2007. On January 1, 2008, he became the new head coach of Arminia Bielefeld . He signed a contract that was valid until June 30, 2009 and managed to stay in the 1st Bundesliga with Arminia Bielefeld in the 2007/08 season. His contract term was extended to 2010. After the 33rd match day, he was given leave of absence by the board on May 17, 2009, one day after a 6-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund . It was the second time in the history of the Bundesliga (after Fritz Pliska with Rot-Weiss Essen in June 1967) that a coach was relieved of his duties one match day before the end of the season.

From July 1, 2009, Frontzeck was the head coach of the Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach. The contract, which ended on June 30, 2011, was extended on July 18, 2010 to June 2013. On February 13, 2011, Frontzeck was dismissed as coach after defeats against the two direct competitors in the relegation battle, VfB Stuttgart and FC St. Pauli .

On October 3, 2012, he succeeded the coach André Schubert, who had previously been on leave, at FC St. Pauli . He managed to stay up with the club, but was given a leave of absence on November 6, 2013 because he and the club's management had different ideas about the timing of his contract extension.

On April 21, 2015 he took over for the remaining five game days of the 2014/15 season the Bundesliga team of Hanover 96 , which was in 15th place in the table and had been without a win for 13 game days, from Tayfun Korkut , who was on leave . He held the class with a record of two wins, two draws and one defeat. The contract was then extended to 2017. On December 21, 2015, he resigned as a coach. Hannover 96 was at the end of the first half of the 2015/16 season on the penultimate place in the Bundesliga.

On February 1, 2018, Frontzeck took over the second division team of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, which was in last place in the table with 12 points after 19 games, from interim coach Hans Werner Moser , who had taken over the team on January 26, 2018 due to Jeff Strasser's absence due to illness . He received a contract that ran until June 30, 2019. Under Frontzeck, the team earned 23 points and narrowed the gap to the non-relegation places, but rose 35 points and five points behind the relegation place as bottom of the table in the 3rd division . Frontzeck remained the coach until he was dismissed on December 1, 2018, after scoring 21 points in 17 games, last four games in a row without a win and only scored one draw with 1:11 goals. The last game was lost 5-0 against SpVgg Unterhaching . The team occupied tenth place in the table (out of 20 places) and was ten points away from a promotion place - the club's declared aim - and four points away from a relegation place. Frontzeck's record in a total of 32 games as FCK head coach: 44 points.

family

Frontzeck has been married since April 12, 1987 and has two children. His father Friedhelm was also a player at Borussia Mönchengladbach from 1959 to 1963 and won the DFB Cup in 1960 .
