GDR Oberliga 1990/91

VfB Stuttgart became the first in the 1991/92 season in the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .

The season is still the Bundesliga season with the most teams and the most games. The league had previously been increased from 18 to 20 teams, because as a result of German reunification, the first and second in the table from the GDR Oberliga , Hansa Rostock and Dynamo Dresden , had been incorporated. In the end, four teams had to be relegated to achieve a reduction to 18 teams in the following season.

Season overview

On the first day of play, Hansa Rostock under coach Uwe Reinders topped the table with a 4-0 win against 1. FC Nürnberg; up to the seventh matchday, the club was surprisingly in first place five times. As the season progressed, Hansa continued to slide and eventually even had to relegate.

For most of the season, Eintracht Frankfurt or Borussia Dortmund were at the top of the table. At the end of the season, a three-way battle between Frankfurt, Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart developed .

Record champions Bayern Munich took tenth place under coaches Jupp Heynckes , Søren Lerby (from October 1991) and Erich Ribbeck (from March 1992) with negative points and a negative goal difference, which was the worst season result since the 1977/78 season . Even after that, at the end of the season, Munich was never again in this table position or worse.

Hansa Rostock had set a new Bundesliga record at the start of the season; As the first newcomer ever, the team had managed to start the season with three wins.

Season finale

Before the last match day, the three teams from Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Dortmund were tied (50:24 points each) in the top three places, while 1. FC Kaiserslautern , fourth in the table, was six points behind. Leader of the table Frankfurt had an almost impossible lead over Stuttgart (+36 compared to +29) and would therefore have defended first place with a victory. Dortmund had the worst goal difference (+18) and could only have become champions if both competitors lost points.

Dortmund took the lead in the 9th minute and seemed to be able to perfect the surprise for a long time, as Stuttgart in the first half and Frankfurt in the second half each conceded a goal and did not score 1: 1 until a few minutes before the end got out. With this starting position, in which the championship was still within reach for each team, the last minutes of the game were probably the most eventful season finale in Bundesliga history. Around ten minutes before the end of the game, Lothar Sippel's alleged goal for the Frankfurt championship was rejected for offside, while in Leverkusen Stuttgart's Matthias Sammer was sent off for complaining. Shortly afterwards, both Manfred Kastl for VfB and Edgar Schmitt for Frankfurt only hit the post. In the 86th minute of the game, Guido Buchwald scored the 2-1 for VfB after a cross from Ludwig Kögl's left, despite the fact that his team was outnumbered and thus took the lead. Frankfurt was then initially denied a justified penalty, whereupon it conceded the 1: 2 goal in the 89th minute. The championship was decided: VfB Stuttgart were German football champions in 1991/92.

With the Leverkusen defeat, Kaiserslautern and Cologne were able to defend their starting positions in the European Cup. At the end of the table Wattenscheid defended his non-relegation place with a 3-2 win against Mönchengladbach; Despite victories, the Stuttgarter Kickers and Rostock as well as Duisburg had to relegate. Düsseldorf's relegation was already certain before the last match day.
