The 2006/07 Bundesliga was the 44th season of the top German division in men's football. It started on August 11, 2006 with FC Bayern Munich's game against Borussia Dortmund and ended on May 19, 2007. VfB Stuttgart became German champions , while 1. FSV Mainz 05 , Alemannia Aachen and Borussia Mönchengladbach were relegated to the second division .
Season course
Championship decision
VfB Stuttgart's title win came as a surprise to many; the team of coach Armin Veh and manager Horst Heldt had been recomposed and at the same time the youngest team in the league, so that before the start of the season it was at best considered a candidate for a place in the UEFA Cup. After the team reached the bottom of the table in the first game with a home defeat against 1. FC Nürnberg and after another home defeat against Borussia Dortmund had an unsatisfactory start to the season for VfB, nothing seemed to indicate a title win for the Swabians at first The favorites were the four winners of the 2005/06 season - FC Bayern Munich , Werder Bremen , Hamburger SV and FC Schalke 04 - who, with the exception of Hamburg, played on the first game days and also in the fight until the end of the season involved in the championship.
In the first half of the season, Werder Bremen, who had strengthened themselves with the Brazilian playmaker Diego and the German central defender Per Mertesacker before the season and, according to many experts, played the most beautiful football in the league, shone . In particular, the away wins in Bochum, Mainz and Frankfurt, when Werder scored six goals each, quickly made coach Thomas Schaaf's team the favorites to win the title. However, since Werder allowed themselves weaknesses again and again, the team could never break away from their pursuers and were only even on points with Schalke Herbstmeister during the winter break. The Gelsenkirchen team also started the season moderately, but after the 3-0 defeat in Stuttgart on matchday nine - the start of VfB's chase to catch up - they started a series of 13 games without defeat, which led them to the top of the table at the beginning of the second half of the season.
Bayern Munich meanwhile played the worst season since the 1994/95 season; despite the change of coach from Felix Magath to Ottmar Hitzfeld after two matchdays in the second half of the season, Munich only finished fourth in the table and thus failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in ten years . In particular, the ten defeats of the season, many of them against relegation candidates, robbed Bayern of all championship dreams at least five game days before the end of the season. Schalke 04 continued to lead the table, Werder Bremen were two points behind the Gelsenkircheners in second, Stuttgart also followed two points behind. However, since the Swabians were able to win the last eight games of the season and the two rivals failed twice on the last days of the game (Schalke lost away in Bochum and Dortmund, Bremen lost in Bielefeld and against Frankfurt), VfB won on matchday 34 a 2: 1 against Energie Cottbus his fifth championship. It was the first title for the Swabians since the 1997 DFB Cup, in the final of which VfB also won against Cottbus.
Relegation battle
With the exception of the teams from Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1. FC Nürnberg , who fought for fifth place until the end of the season, the other twelve teams in the league were in a relegation battle until a few matchdays before the end, which was unique in this constellation. It was common to all teams that they had both longer periods of weakness and success streaks; Apart from Borussia Mönchengladbach , which started the season with four home wins, but slipped into the lower table by the winter break, and FSV Mainz 05 , which stayed in the relegation zone from the 9th to the 21st match day, there was no club over long periods of time in a relegation zone.
Hannover 96 started the first half of the season with zero points from the first three games and the first coaching change from Peter Neururer to Dieter Hecking , but was later able to move into the midfield of the league. In return, Mainz 05 and Hamburger SV in particular stayed far below their chances, each of which recorded only one win and overwintered in the last two places. Since both teams (Hamburger SV with the new coach Huub Stevens ) started the second half of the season with a series of wins, one of the most exciting relegation decisions in the history of the Bundesliga quickly developed. Borussia Dortmund and Arminia Bielefeld , for example, only saved the second change of coach of the season - Bert van Marwijk and Jürgen Röber initially failed in Dortmund , so that Thomas Doll, who had previously been dismissed from Hamburger SV, had to save the team from relegation, while Arminia corrected it The fall on a relegation place under Thomas von Heesen and Frank Geideck was the first from Bielefeld " coach of the century" Ernst Middendorp .
The two newcomers from VfL Bochum and Energie Cottbus confidently secured themselves relegation; Both played surprisingly strong, especially away from home, and in Theofanis Gekas and Sergiu Radu they had both inexpensive and successful strikers. The third climber from Aachen , however, had to relegate; after the team seemed saved after the 26th matchday with 33 points, they only got one point from the last eight games. Mainz 05 was also unable to improve at the end of the season and was relegated to the second division after three years in the Bundesliga. After a strong second half of the season (second behind the champions from Stuttgart in the second half of the table), Hamburger SV entered the international competition and qualified for the UEFA Cup through the UI Cup .

List of goalscorers
Just as surprising as the championship success of VfB Stuttgart was the winning of the top scorer by the Greek striker Theofanis Gekas, who only switched from Panathinaikos Athens to VfL Bochum during the current season and immediately gained a foothold in the Bundesliga. Behind Gekas, the Swiss Alexander Frei from Borussia Dortmund and Roy Makaay from FC Bayern Munich finished second in the scorers list with 16 goals each; However, both had already become top scorer in major European leagues, Frei 2005 in France and Makaay 2003 in Spain.
