FC Bayern Munich became the first in the 1973/74 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .

Season overview

In 1974, FC Bayern Munich won their third title in a row. This was the first title hat trick in the history of the Bundesliga. In addition, Bayern were the first German team to win the European Cup . With Sepp Maier , Franz Beckenbauer , Georg Schwarzenbeck , Paul Breitner , Uli Hoeneß and Gerd Müller , Bayern Munich also provided a large part of the German national team that won the World Cup this year . Bayern suffered a defeat on matchday 12, October 20, 1973, when they lost 4-7 in Kaiserslautern after a 3-0 and later 4-1 lead. The championship was decided on matchday 33, when Bayern won their home game against Kickers Offenbach 1-0, while the second-placed Mönchengladbach Borussia lost 1-0 at Fortuna Düsseldorf and the Munich team was three points ahead of the final matchday. Jupp Heynckes (who set a record in the Bundesliga with 17 away goals in the season) missed a penalty for Mönchengladbach in this game. This meant that the possibility of a decision for the championship on the last matchday in a direct duel, in which Bayern had to compete in Mönchengladbach, was extinguished. After previous celebrations, Bayern lost 5-0. They won the first leg on December 8, 1973 4-3.

Borussia Mönchengladbach qualified for the UEFA Cup as runner-up, Fortuna Düsseldorf in third place and 1. FC Köln in fifth place. The fourth Eintracht Frankfurt won the DFB Cup , so the runner-up cup winner Hamburger SV played instead of Eintracht in the UEFA Cup, as the Frankfurt team competed in the European Cup Winners' Cup . The final was only played on August 17th because of the World Cup. Frankfurt won 3-1 after extra time.

The relegation question was answered on the last day of the game. The Wuppertal SV , the outwardly at VfB Stuttgart had to play, scored a goal by Heinz-Dieter Lömm 81 minutes a 2: 2nd This result was enough because Fortuna Cologne lost 4-0 at the Offenbacher Kickers at the same time.
