Herbert Zimmermann (born July 1, 1954 in Engers , today in Neuwied ) is a former German football player .

Career

societies

After his youth at FV Engers 07 , Zimmermann received a professional contract with Bundesliga club Bayern Munich in 1972 . The attacker only made two appearances in two seasons: On March 24, 1973 (26th matchday), he won the 5-1 home game against VfB Stuttgart in the 46th minute for Franz Krauthausen and on November 3, 1973 ( 14th matchday) in the 1-0 win in the away game against VfL Bochum in the 65th minute for Willi Hoffmann .

At the beginning of the 1974/75 season he moved to 1. FC Köln , where he made 15 appearances in the first season. His first Bundesliga goal on September 28, 1974 (6th matchday) in the 72nd minute meant the 1-1 draw at Hertha BSC . From the 1975/76 season (until 1983/84 ) he was 187 times exclusively as a defender for the billy goats and scored a further 21 goals, eight in the 1978/79 season alone . He made his last Bundesliga appearance on December 9, 1983 (17th matchday) when his club lost 2-1 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen .

He also scored six times in 39 DFB Cup games (37 of them for 1. FC Köln) and once (on October 18, 1978 at Lokomotive Sofia ) in 27 European cup games. In 1988 Herbert Zimmermann was also active for SpVgg Bad Homburg in the Oberliga Hessen for a few months .

National team

Zimmermann played six times for the B national team ; on April 26, 1977 he played his first international match in Aachen in a 2-1 victory over Belgium . In the same year, encounters against the national teams from Jamaica, Czechoslovakia and Italy followed . In 1980 there were two more international matches. On May 14, 1980 in Kassel , in the 2-1 victory over the national team of Poland , he played his last game for the B national team.

On October 6, 1976 he was appointed to the senior national team. In the test international match in Wales, which Germany won 2-0 goals, he wore the national jersey for the first time in the first half. As a national player, he took part in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina . By 1980 he had 13 international matches in which he scored two goals: On May 2, 1979 in Wales and on December 22, 1979 against the national team of Turkey , when Germany won 2-0 goals in qualifying for the European Championship.

At the European Championships in 1980 he pinched his sciatic nerve on the day of the opening game and was no longer used due to an injury. As part of the team, he was nevertheless able to adorn himself with the title of European Champion and was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Carstens.
