European Champion Clubs' Cup 1972/73

The 1973/74 European Cup was the 19th edition of the competition. 31 club teams took part, including 30 national champions from the previous season and the defending champions with Ajax Amsterdam .

FC Bayern Munich took part for the Federal Republic, Dynamo Dresden for the GDR , Wacker Innsbruck for Austria and FC Basel for Switzerland. In the second round there was the first German-German clash, here Bayern were able to prevail with 4: 3 and 3: 3 against Dresden.

The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the event of a tie, there was first extra time, then, with the exception of the final, a penalty shoot-out. Except for the defending champion Ajax Amsterdam, the clubs started in the first round.

The final took place on May 15, 1974 in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels in front of 49,000 spectators. In the first game between Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid it was 1-1 after extra time because Georg Schwarzenbeck had equalized in the 120th minute from distance. Atlético Madrid had taken the lead five minutes earlier. A replay took place on May 17th. Here Bayern won 4-0 and were the first German winner. In this match, however, four players were suspended from the Madrilenians, which led to corresponding comments in the Spanish newspapers.
