European Champion Clubs' Cup 1971/72

The 1972/73 European Cup was the 18th edition of the competition. 30 club teams took part, including 30 national champions from the previous season and the defending champions with Ajax Amsterdam .

FC Bayern Munich took part for the Federal Republic of Germany, 1. FC Magdeburg for the German Democratic Republic , FC Basel for Switzerland and SSW Innsbruck for Austria .

The participants played in pure cup mode with (with the exception of the finals) back and forth for the crown of European club football. In the event of a tie, there was first overtime, then penalty shoot-out. With the exception of the defending champion Ajax Amsterdam and the Czechoslovak club Spartak Trnava , the clubs started in the first round.

The final took place on 30 May 1973 at the stadium Red Star of Belgrade before 91,654 spectators instead. Ajax Amsterdam won the final with a goal from Johnny Rep . Thus, the Dutch club won the title for the third time and was allowed to keep the trophy forever.

1The second leg in Athens originally ended 2-1 for Athens and a subsequent penalty shoot-out. The Russian referee Lipatov made a serious mistake. The game was canceled and rerun on October 26, 1972.

2nd round

The first legs took place on the 24th (Bayern vs. Nicosia) / 25. October and 8th November (Sofia vs. Amsterdam), the second leg on October 26th (Nicosia vs. Bavaria) and November 8/9/29 (Amsterdam vs. Sofia) in November 1972. The second leg of Bayern against Nicosia took place in the Rosenaustadion in Augsburg .
