The European Cup of National Champions 1961/62 was the 7th edition of the competition. 29 club teams took part, including 28 national champions from the previous season and the defending champions with Benfica Lisbon .
The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the event of a tie, regardless of the number of goals scored away, there was a playoff on a neutral pitch.
The final took place on May 2, 1962 in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam in front of 65,000 spectators. The defending champions Benfica Lisbon beat Real Madrid 5-3.
