European Champion Clubs' Cup 1959/60
CF Barcelona prevailed against Hamburger SV in the semifinals

The European Cup of National Champions 1960/61 was the 6th edition of the competition. 28 club teams took part, including 27 national champions from the previous season and the defending champions with Real Madrid . However, in the end only 26 registered clubs competed, two of which waived before the preliminary round.

The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the event of a tie, regardless of the number of goals scored away, there was a playoff on a neutral pitch.

In the first round, the teams from German-speaking countries eliminated each other; the victorious teams from Rapid Vienna and Hamburger SV then advanced to the semi-finals. There it came to a scandal in Vienna when angry spectators stormed the second leg against the eventual cup winner on the lawn of the Prater Stadium and a police operation was necessary to protect the referee and the guest players; the match was not kicked off afterwards. In the Volksparkstadion , the Hamburgers were only a few seconds away, then after 1960 a West German club would have made it into the final - had it not been for Sándor Kocsis ( CF Barcelona ) who scored the 1: 2 goal in the last minute in front of over 70,000 spectators and thus forced a play-off .

The final took place without German participation on May 30, 1961 in the Wankdorf stadium in Bern in front of almost 27,000 spectators. It saw a different cup winner than Real Madrid for the first time. The top scorer was José Águas of Benfica Lisbon with eleven goals.

1 The TJ Hradec Králové went on without a fight because Bucharest (it was said, because of weakness) renounced the game.
2 Karl-Marx-Stadt continued without a fight because the British authorities did not issue visas to the GDR team and Glenavon did not want to play his home game in a neutral place.
