← European Champion Clubs' Cup 1989/90 |
The European Cup of National Champions 1990/91 was the 36th edition of the competition. 31 club teams took part, including 30 national champions from the previous season and the defending champions with AC Milan. With Red Star Belgrade , an Eastern European team won the competition for the second time after Steaua Bucharest in 1986 . The venue for the final was the Stadio San Nicola in Bari, Italy , on May 29, 1991 .
For the first time after a five-year ban due to the Heysel disaster in 1985, English teams were allowed to start, but the qualified champions Liverpool FC had been suspended for seven years. In addition, Ajax Amsterdam could not compete as champions of the Netherlands due to a one-year ban.
mode
The competition was last held in pure cup mode with home and away legs (with the exception of the final). In the case of a tie, the higher number of goals scored away counted first; if there was also a tie, the second leg was extended and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out was played immediately afterwards .
