The Stadio San Nicola is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the southwest of the Italian city of Bari , in the Apulia region . It is the home of the SSC Bari football club .

history

The facility was built on the occasion of the 1990 Football World Cup from October 1986 to April 1990, holds 58,270 spectators and is named after the patron saint of the city of Bari, Nikolaus von Myra ( Italian: San Nicola di Myra ). On June 3, 1990, it opened with a friendly between AS Bari and AC Milan (2-0). Because of its modern, futuristic appearance, it is also called "L'astronave" ( German  "The  spaceship " ). The Stadio San Nicola was built according to a design by the Genovese architect Renzo Piano . Initially, the plans envisaged a stadium with 45,000 covered seats on the upper and lower tier. The main feature of the Stadio San Nicola is the upper tier, which consists of 26 separate parts, eight meters apart. Piano planned these petals for security reasons to separate opposing fan groups. It has an athletics facility. It was a CONI wish to include other sports besides football in the stadium. But it was only used very rarely. The arena was built in place of the ailing Stadio della Vittoria . A new building was necessary because Bari had been awarded the contract as a venue for the 1990 World Cup .

At the 1990 World Cup, five games took place at San Nicola, three group B matches, the round of 16 between Czechoslovakia and Costa Rica and the third place match between England and hosts Italy . On May 29, 1991 the final of the European Champions Cup between Red Star Belgrade and Olympique Marseille took place in Bari, which the Yugoslavs won 5-3 on penalties .

On 14 May 2006, the Arena was home because of a court ban the Calabrian the role of Serie A between Reggina Calcio and Juventus , the 0: finished 2nd This game was the last game in Serie A for the guests before the forced relegation due to the manipulation scandal . Nevertheless, the stadium was filled to the last seat and the fans of the old lady celebrated winning the Italian championship, which they later revoked has been. In 2007, the San Nicola was also one of the eight stadiums with which Italy competed unsuccessfully to host the 2012 European Football Championship .

The San Nicola stadium with a damaged roof in June 2014

In 2014 the stadium was in a shabby condition. The serious damage in which u. a. In 2012 parts of the roof, the grandstand and the pylons as well as the electronic scoreboard were damaged during a storm, have not yet been removed. At the end of February 2016, a large piece of the membrane over the east stand was torn due to strong winds. It was the ninth time that part of the canopy had been destroyed.

According to a feasibility study from the beginning of 2018, there were four scenarios for the renovation or renewal of the Stadio San Nicola. In the first scenario, the grandstands would have been moved closer to the pitch. This would have required investments of 120 million euros. The structure of the upper tier and the roof would have been preserved. The second scenario was to lower the pitch by 13 meters. This ran the risk of delays if there were archaeological finds there. This option would also have cost EUR 120 million. Scenario three envisaged the demolition of the stadium for 10 million euros and a new construction on the stadium site for 100 million euros. This would have been the most time consuming solution. The last thing on the list was the new building on an adjacent site. The total costs for this would also have been around 100 million euros. The capacity of around 40,000 spectators was the same in all scenarios. In addition, the construction of a shopping center with 40,000 m² of retail space as well as sports halls and a medical center was planned. In July 2018, the FC Bari 1908, predecessor organization was the SSC Bari, due to insolvency of the Series B excluded and met later in the series D at. This stopped the planning for a conversion or new building.

In January 2020, the first refurbishment measure began with the assembly of 21,211 new plastic seats. This should last until mid-April of the year. In addition, cracks and holes in the concrete of the stands are to be repaired. The remaining parts of the roof membrane have now been removed. Only a small part of the main stand remained. So far, 7,660 seats on the eastern upper tier (opposite stand) have been replaced. In March, 6,363 seats are to follow on the lower tier. When the seats on the east stand have been exchanged, 7188 seat shells are to be installed on the upper part of the western main stand in April. The costs are around 700,000 euros.
