On June 16, 2011, less than a month after the final of the 2010/11 Champions League season , which was also played at Wembley Stadium, the UEFA Executive Committee in Nyon made the decision about the final of the Champions League season 2012/13 will also be held at Wembley. Thus, for the first time in Champions League history, the final was held twice in the same stadium within three years. According to UEFA President Michel Platini , the decision was made in honor of the Football Association , which was founded in 1863 as the world's first football association and thus celebrated its 150th birthday in 2013. With the Champions League final and its predecessor, the European Champions' Cup now hosted seven times, Wembley Stadium is the arena in which the final of the competition was most often played.

Teams

Borussia Dortmund as champions and FC Bayern Munich as runner-up in the 2011/12 Bundesliga season were directly qualified for the Champions League. Dortmund beat Real Madrid , Ajax Amsterdam and Manchester City , who won the championship in their respective national leagues in their respective national leagues in the previous season, without defeat in Group D , which the media often dubbed thedeath group ” . In the round of 16, Borussia Dortmund defeated the Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk after the club played 2-2 in Donetsk and won 3-0 in Dortmund. Jürgen Klopp's team played the quarter-finals against the Spanish club FC Málaga and was only able to play 0-0 away despite dominance. In Dortmund, Borussia defeated FC Málaga 3: 2, although they were 1: 2 behind by the 90th minute of the game; the late winning goal fell (like the guests' second goal before) after an offside position. In the semifinals, the German club was drawn again to Real Madrid, the runner-up from Group D. With a 4-1 victory in the first leg, in which Robert Lewandowski scored all goals for Dortmund, Borussia won every home game in the Champions League season. With the result, Dortmund could also afford the 2-0 defeat on April 30, 2013 in Madrid to advance to the final.

FC Bayern Munich reached a Champions League final for the third time in four years and for the second time in a row. The previous matches were lost to Inter Milan ( 2010 ) and Chelsea FC ( 2012 ). Jupp Heynckes' team finished the group stage in first place ahead of rivals FC Valencia , BATE Baryssau and OSC Lille . In the end, the team was level on points with Valencia CF; However, FC Bayern were group winners through a direct comparison (2: 1 and 1: 1). However, the club had to experience a 1: 3 defeat on the second match day against BATE in Minsk . In the round of 16, the Munich team were drawn to Arsenal FC and, thanks to the away goals rule, they reached the quarter-finals after a 3-1 win in London and a 0-2 defeat in Munich. FC Bayern won this against Juventus Turin, who had not been defeated in the Champions League season until then, with two 2-0 victories. In the semi-finals, FC Bayern met FC Barcelona and defeated the Catalan club 4-0 at home, the second leg was won 3-0. One day after BVB made it into the final, it was clear with FC Bayern's qualification for the final that, for the first time since FC Bayern won the Champions League in 2001, a German team would win a European Cup.

In the league, Borussia Dortmund was previously German champions twice in a row , setting a new point record with 81 points in the 2011/12 season. In 2012, they also defeated the then runner-up FC Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup final 5-2, so that the Munich team finished second in the championship, the Champions League and the DFB Cup . In the 2012/13 season , after the 28th matchday, FC Bayern became German champions earlier than any other team before in the Bundesliga with 75 points and set a new record in Bundesliga history with 91 points on matchday 34 . Borussia Dortmund in second place also qualified for the 2013/14 Champions League season . The Bundesliga games between Munich and Dortmund each ended 1: 1. In the DFB Cup of the same season , both teams were drawn to each other in the quarter-finals . Bayern Munich won 1-0 in their own stadium.

Course of the game

First halftime

Dortmund started with powerful pressing and already reached the first corner in the third minute after a volley from Lewandowski. As a result, Klopp's team succeeded in disrupting Bayern's build-up early on and rarely allowed them to get near their own penalty area. After ten minutes Błaszczykowski put a shot next to and over the goal, in the 14th minute Neuer had to direct a long-range shot from Lewandowski over the crossbar. Only a minute later, Neuer saved against Błaszczykowski, who finished directly after a cross from eight meters. In the 19th minute, Neuer was able to clear a shot from Reus to the fifth corner for BVB. Three minutes later it was Bender, whose undercover 10-meter shot was held by Neuer.

After 27 minutes, Munich was able to break away from the black and yellow grip enough to have their first chance to score: Ribéry came through to the left and crossed to Mandzukic, who headed from seven meters against Bender. Weidenfeller steered the ball to the top of the bar for Bayern's first corner kick. Martinez came up but headed just over the gate. Two minutes later, Dante saw the first yellow card of the encounter for a foul on Reus. Bayern came more often into the Dortmund half and in the 30th minute Robben appeared completely free in the BVB penalty area, but hit Weidenfeller on the head.

Schweinsteiger shot a free kick well over the gate in the 34th minute. Shortly thereafter, Lewandowski was able to overrun Dante on the right side of the penalty area and shot from ten meters away, but Neuer had shortened the angle and made it 0-0. In the 37th Robben came through on the right side, Subotic cleared for the corner and the cross headed Müller clearly next to the goal. Five minutes later it was up to the Dortmunders again in the person of Reus, who tried it from an acute angle. In return, Hummels failed to intercept a long pass on Robben; he was able to steer for the goal alone and did not shoot the ball past Weidenfeller, but again at his head.

Second halftime

BVB also started the second half aggressively and one minute after the restart, Dante cleared Błaszczykowski after a cross from Lewandowski. Bayern again struggled to build an orderly game in the initial phase, but were able to gain more space after about ten minutes as Dortmund withdrew a little. So they came in the 58th minute to a corner that was passed on by Martinez to Mandzukic. However, he didn't get enough pressure behind the header and Weidenfeller was able to parry. Two minutes later, Ribéry, who had so far not been visible due to Błaszczykowski's running work, was able to pass the ball past three defenders to Robben on the left corner of the penalty area. It went through to the baseline and passed Weidenfeller in the middle. The defenders, who had previously taken care of Ribéry, were missing in the middle and Mandzukic was able to push in to make it 1-0. Two minutes later, after a long pass from Alaba, Mandzukic reappeared in front of Weidenfeller, but could not conquer him from a tight angle.

In this phase of emerging dominance of Munich, Dante kicked Reus' stomach in the 67th minute when he wanted to reach a long ball. Since this scene took place in the penalty area, Rizzoli whistled a penalty, but did not show Dante a second yellow card. Gündogan stepped up and shot well placed, Neuer picked the wrong corner. After the 1-1 draw, the game was characterized by attempts to get in front of the opponent's goal quickly after winning the ball, as Hummels did after Błaszczykowski's work, but the shot went well over the goal. Bayern were closer to the opening goal two minutes later when Müller overcame Weidenfeller on the right, shot flat towards the goal from an acute angle and Subotic was able to knock the ball away just in front of the goal line in the last second before Robben was ready to shoot. Shortly afterwards, Weidenfeller directed a 20-meter shot from Alaba around the post. In the 77th minute, Müller had a tricky running duel with Subotic in the penalty area and passed the ball to Mandzukic's right. Whose shot went to the outside net.

The Dortmunders hardly came in front of Bayern's goal, but revealed more and more vulnerabilities in Munich attacks. Weidenfeller was able to parry a shot from Schweinsteiger in the 87th minute for a corner. In the 89th minute, a free kick from Boateng in the center circle came in the center of the Dortmund penalty area, Ribéry prevailed against Piszczek and played the ball backwards with the sole into the path of Robben. The curved Hummels and overcame Weidenfeller by rolling the ball across to his and Weidenfeller's direction to 2: 1 into the far corner. Two minutes later, already in three-minute stoppage time, Sahin and Schieber came for Błaszczykowski and Bender, but Schieber's harmless 15-meter shot shortly afterwards was easily saved by Neuer. Luiz Gustavo came on for Ribéry, Mandzukic was replaced by Gomez and BVB's last advance also fizzled out.
