It was built for the 1936 Summer Olympics with a capacity of 100,000 spectators, rebuilt for the 1974 World Cup , and with 85,000 seats it was the tournament's largest stadium. The costs are given as 2.74 million euros.

Only a few times, was the stadium been the scene of the highest European club competition: the repeat match of the knockout round first-leg match "with the rifle litter" in the 1971-72 European Cup was Borussia Moenchengladbach because of the imposed square lock in Berlin and in the Champions League season 1999/2000 Hertha BSC played host to the stadium several times. The venue's only European Cup final to date was also suspended: the 1986 UEFA Cup final second leg with 1. FC Köln as the home team.
