The 2008/09 UEFA Champions League was the 17th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 54th overall. 76 clubs from 52 national associations took part in the competition this year. Only Liechtenstein did not have a representative. Bulgarian champions CSKA Sofia were not allowed to qualify because they had not received a UEFA license for financial reasons. Vice-champion Levski Sofia took his place . The FC Porto was excluded from the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in the first instance due to a referee bribery scandal in the 2003/04 season.
The season began with the first qualifying round on 15/16. July 2008 and ended with the final on May 27, 2009 in the Olympic Stadium in Rome . There FC Barcelona beat Manchester United 2-0.
The top scorer of the competition was the Argentine Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona with nine goals.

First qualifying round
The first leg took place on 15./16. July, the second legs on 22./23. July 2008.
Second qualifying round
The first legs took place on 29./30. July, the second legs on 5./6. August 2008.
Third qualifying round
The first legs took place on 12./13. August, the second leg on 26./27. August 2008. While the winners took part in the Champions League group stage, the losers started in the first round of the UEFA Cup .
Group stage
The games took place from September 16 to December 10. The top two in each group qualify for the round of 16, the third in the group move to the round of 32 of the UEFA Cup . If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:
