CFR Cluj is the city's oldest football club and was founded in 1907 as Kolozsvári Vasutas Sport Club ( Hungarian for Cluj- Napoca Railway Sports Club ). In 1919, after Transylvania was awarded to Romania, the association was renamed CFR (abbreviated for Romanian Railway Company) Cluj .

In 1975 and 2006 CFR Cluj came fifth in the Romanian league 1 . In 2007 CFR Cluj reached 3rd place in the Romanian League 1 - so they were eligible to qualify for the UEFA Cup . In the second qualifying round they had to give up under the new coach Ioan Andone at home on August 16, 2007 with 1: 3 against the Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta , which they no longer on Cyprus on August 30, 2007 by a 0: 0 could make up for.

2008 and 2010: Twice the double

After the first half of the 2007/08 season , CFR Cluj was unbeaten and had a seven point lead over second placed Rapid Bucharest . In the spring, Steaua caught up with Bucharest and took the lead on the third from last game day. Nevertheless, CFR Cluj became Romanian champions for the first time in the club's history with a 1-0 win on the last match day against city rivals Universitatea Cluj , two points ahead of runner-up Steaua Bucharest. This qualified them for the group stage of the Champions League 2008/09 .

On May 10, 2008, CFR Cluj won the Romanian Cup final against Unirea Valahorum Urziceni 2-1 and was the first in the club's history to win the Romanian Cup. The starting eleven of the season was Nuno Claro ( Stăncioiu ) - Tony , Cadú , Galiassi , Panin - Trică , Dani , Leão , Culio - Semedo , Fabbiani . Didi often played (only before the winter break), as well as Ruiz and Dubarbier (additions during the winter break).

CFR Cluj played in the group stage of the 2008/09 Champions League against Chelsea , AS Roma and Girondins Bordeaux .

Right at its first appearance in the Champions League, the club achieved a small sensation by landing a 2-1 away win at three-time Italian champions and current runner-up AS Roma. In addition, they achieved a 0-0 win against Chelsea (last year's finalist) on the second match day of the group stage. However, the rest of the season was not very successful and with Ioan Andone , Maurizio Trombetta , Aleš Jindra and Toni four head coaches replaced one another. From November 15, 2009 to September 12, 2010, the Italian Andrea Mandorlini was the coach of CFR Cluj, who led the club to another double: the championship and the Romanian cup victory. The coaching post then took over Sorin Cârțu , who was released on November 25, 2010, whereupon Alin Minteuan rose to head coach. After the last game day of the 2010/11 season , Jorge Costa was presented on May 22, 2011 as the successor to Minteuan in the office of head coach.

2012: Another title win

Although CFR was leader of the table, Costa was dismissed on April 8, 2012 after the 5-0 home defeat in the championship game against Rapid Bucharest and replaced by returnees Ioan Andone . This led the team to their third league title one game before the end of the season. After poor results at the beginning of the 2012/13 season , Andone broke his contract on October 24, 2012 after the 1-1 draw at Galatasaray Istanbul in the Champions League .

In 2016, Cluj won the Romanian Cup for the fourth time.
