Sorin Cârțu (born November 12, 1955 in Cornu ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach .

Career as a player

After visiting Colegiul Național Carol I in Craiova, striker Cârțu had the greatest success in the years 1981 to 1983, when he was twice the second best scorer of the season in Divizia A for Universitatea Craiova with 19 goals each time.

Career as a coach

At the beginning of the 1988/89 season , Cârțu was the successor to Gheorghe Constantin coach of his home club, with whom he made the double in the 1990/1991 season . In summer 1992 they parted ways. In the spring of 1993, he succeeded Marian Bondrea as coach of local rival Electroputere Craiova , who also played in Divizia A at the time. After missing qualification for the UEFA Cup , his contract was not renewed.

After he had coached Rapid Bucharest at the end of the 1994/95 season , but could not lead the club in the UEFA Cup , Cârțu returned to Uni Craiova at the beginning of the 1995/96 season and managed to qualify for the UI Cup . After a mixed start into the following season , he was released in August 1996.

From 1998 to 2002 Cârțu was the coach of FC Extensiv Craiova , before he was hired again at Uni Craiova in autumn 2002. After a placement in midfield at the end of the 2002/03 season, he canceled his contract on September 29, 2003. In the 2003/04 winter break , he was coach of Oțelul Galați and led the club to the cup final , where he was defeated by champions Dinamo Bucharest and thereby qualified for the UEFA Cup . In the winter break of 2004/05 he moved to FC Argeş Piteşti . After relegation in 2005, they were released shortly before the end of the following season after a year.

At the beginning of the 2006/07 season Cârțu was head coach of FCU Politehnica Timişoara . After only twelve games, he resigned in October 2006 and was replaced by Alin Artimon . A few weeks signed him league rival FC Naţional Bucharest to the transition into the Divizia B to avoid. Given the threat of relegation, he was released in April 2007. On October 10, 2007 Dacia Mioveni took him to succeed Florin Marin , but he could not avoid relegation at the end of the season .

In September 2008, Cârțu took over the first division side Pandurii Târgu Jiu , whom he coached until October 2009 when he was replaced by Liviu Ciobotariu . In March 2010 he took over from Ciobotariu himself, but was released on May 12, 2010, two game days before the end of the season. Pandurii managed to avoid relegation, if only because of the forced relegation of Internațional Curtea de Argeş . From September 12, 2010 he trained the Romanian champion CFR Cluj . Because he smashed a pane of Plexiglas in the Champions League defeat against FC Basel on November 23, 2010 , he was released on November 25, 2010. On March 7, 2011, he replaced Marius Lăcătuș as coach of Steaua Bucharest . On May 5, 2011 Cârțu resigned and was replaced by Cosmin Olăroiu , with whom Steaua won the final of the Romanian Cup on May 25, 2011 . In December 2011, a commitment to the Kazakh first division club FK Taras failed due to the payment modalities required by Cârțu.

On April 17, 2012, Cârțu was technical advisor to the second division Alro Slatina . At the same time, his former teammate Mircea Irimescu was hired as head coach, who suffered a myocardial infarction before the first joint championship game on April 21, 2012 and was replaced on May 11, 2012 by Adrian Popescu , another old companion of Universitatea Craiova . Since promotion to League 1 was missed in the 2011/12 season and Alro then merged with local rivals FC Olt Slatina , Cârțu and Popescu had to leave the club in July 2012.

On October 9, 2012 Cârțu was head coach of FC Brașov , he resigned after one victory and three defeats in the championship and elimination in the Cupa României 2012/13 on November 12, 2012 from his office and handed the team to his predecessor Adrian Szabo .

On April 22, 2013, he and his two assistant coaches Mircea Irimescu and Adrian Popescu committed the relegation-threatened first division club CSMS Iași . The coaching team could not ensure relegation and was released in early June 2013. In early September 2014 he became the technical director of CS Universitatea Craiova .
