Oțelul Galați was founded in 1964. For the first time the association in 1986 rose in the first Romanian league, the Divizia A on. In 1988 he qualified fourth for the UEFA Cup for the first time and won a 1-0 win against Juventus Turin . At this game, the current record in the club's history was reached with 35,000 spectators.

After two fourth places in the years 1996/97 and 1997/98 occupied Oţelul under coach Costel Orac at the end of the season 2002/03 only rank 13 and had in the relegation matches against FC Oradea , the representative from the Divizia B compete. Although the opponent prevailed, Oțelul was allowed to stay first class, as the two local rivals Astra Ploieşti and FC Petrolul Ploieşti merged in the summer of 2003 and a place in the House of Lords became free. A year later, the club reached the final of the Cupa României 2003/04 , which was lost 2-0 to Dinamo Bucharest .

On December 27, 2005, Petre Grigoraş was hired a new coach. Grigoraş had dissolved his contract with Farul Constanța during the first half of the 2005/06 season and replaced interim coach Gigi Ion , who had taken over this role in November 2005 after Aurel Șunda was fired . In early July 2009 Grigoraş left the club in the direction of Politehnica Iaşi and was replaced by Dorinel Munteanu .

In the 2010/11 season , Oțelul Galați was Romanian champions for the first time in the club's history, qualifying directly for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League . There they were eliminated from the group bottom after six defeats. In July 2011 Oțelul won the Romanian Supercup by beating Steaua Bucharest 1-0 .

In the following years, however, the club played a mediocre role again. In the 2014/15 season, the club reached 17th place (relegation place) in League 1 and therefore played in League 2 from the 2015/16 season.

Galați went bankrupt in spring 2016. The re-establishment took place in the same year. They started again in League IV under the name ASC Oțelul Galați . There the club secured the championship title and rose to League III .
