Liga II is the second highest division in Romanian football . It was founded in 1934 and was called Divizia B up to and including the 2005/06 season . The seasons 1992/93 to 1996/97, in which the division was called Divizia A , were an exception .

League II was divided into two seasons - Seria I and Seria II - with 18 teams each in the 2006/07 to 2009/10 seasons , from which the first and second placed in League 1 and the four last placed in the League III descended. In the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons there were only 16 teams each, of which three should be relegated subject to the licensing process. In the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons, the number of relegated clubs was increased to five clubs per season in order to gradually reduce the total number of second division clubs by four to 28 or 24 teams, with only six promoted teams from League III.

For the 2016/17 season, both seasons were merged into a league with 20 teams.

The season with the most participating teams was the 1947/48 season (64 teams).
