ASU Politehnica Timișoara is a Romanian football club from the city of Timișoara and has played in Liga II , the country's second-highest division , since 2016 . The club belongs to the Polytechnic University of Timișoara and was founded in 2012 by fans of the former football club FC Politehnica Timișoara . After the dissolution of FC Poli Timişoara, the Romanian club ACS Recaş was relocated to Timişoara and renamed ACS Politehnica Timişoara . However, the fans could not identify with this new club and decided to found and support their own club. The new club ASU Poli then started in Liga V Timiş , the lowest Romanian league in the Timiş district .
history
Foundation (2012)
As with almost everywhere in the Romanian football industry, the lack of other ambitions led to purely municipal championships. The supporters of ACS Poli were tired of following a club tour where they were exposed to unfulfilled promises and emotional blackmail. As a result, the League II team was disbanded. There was also the relocation of the ACS Recaș team to Timișoara, which the fans were anything but supportive of. Representatives of Peluza Sud, the fan curve of Poli, decided, together with other fans of Politehnica Timișoara, to take over, support and promote the team from the Timișoara Polytechnic University from the Romanian fifth league from now on . Even if ASU Poli is not the legal successor of the former first division club, it is the only team with which the Poli fans identify and which they perceive as the team that can advance the soul of the club and color the ranks in purple.
District Leagues (2012-2015)
In their first season after the establishment (2012/13) they reached the second place in Liga V, Seria 3 and thus managed the immediate promotion to Liga IV Timiș County. In the following season (2013/14) they again managed to place second in the championship, but this place did not entitle them to participate in the promotion games. However, ASU Poli won its first title with the Cupa României of Timiș County. They won the final against FC Giarmata 4: 3 afterwards.
In the 2014/15 season they were champions in their league and thus took part in the promotion games for League III . In the same year they won the newly introduced indoor tournament "Fotbal fără patroni" ("Football without a patron"). The victory is played among four self-governing clubs. In addition to Poli, FC Arges 1953 , FC Vaslui 2002 and host LSS Voinţa Sibiu completed the field of participants. On June 11, Voința Lupac Poli's opponent for the play-offs for Liga III was announced. Timișoara won the first leg 5-1 and has already taken a huge step towards League III. In the second leg they lost 1: 2 to Lupac, but were able to celebrate promotion to League III and thus promotion to professional football due to the better goal difference.
Professional football (2015-present)
ASU Poli has represented itself well in League III from the start. They won their debut game 3-0 against Minerul Motru . They sat at the top of the table after a few matchdays and could not be displaced from the top three places for the entire season. Already on May 21, 2016, the third from last game day, Poli was able to celebrate promotion to League II after an away win against the second team of CSU Craiova . Poli ended the first year in the second division with early relegation in 15th place.
Fan culture
ASU Politehnica has a very large fan base, which extends beyond the borders of Romania. The reason for the many sympathies is on the one hand the great tradition of the previous club, on the other hand the idea of turning away from commercialized football and founding a self-governing club. With this kind of association, the supporters of Politehnica were the first in Romania and thus became the impetus for a movement that is growing more and more. At the indoor tournament "Fotbal fără patroni" ("Football without a patron") a banner with the inscription "Poli Timișoara - a role model for the whole country" could be seen, which was hung up by the opposing teams. Poli fans are known for their enormous willingness to travel and relentless support. The ultra movement includes groups such as Urban Guerilla , Frenetic , Bastion and Gruppo Autonomo Viola . There are active fan friendships with Rapid Bucharest and Ultras from Borussia Mönchengladbach .
Over the years, great rivalries have developed in the fan scene. Poli has the greatest rivalry with UTA Arad . It arose due to the competition between the two cities of Timișoara and Arad, which are not only close to each other, but are also the largest centers in the west of the country. Both claim to have been the first place in Romania where a football match took place. The matches between UTA and Poli are called Derby-ul Vestului, the West Derby, and are always played in sold-out stadiums. The fan groups of both clubs try to outdo each other with choreographies and chants every time. Unfortunately, violent clashes sometimes occur. The last derby took place on March 8, 2013. Further rivalries exist with Dinamo Bucharest , CFR Cluj , Steaua Bucharest and Universitatea Craiova .
