CS Pandurii Târgu Jiu ( Clubul Sportiv "Pandurii-Lignitul" Târgu Jiu ) is a Romanian football club from Târgu Jiu . He has been playing in Liga II , the second Romanian football league , since 2017 .
history
The Romanian first division club Pandurii Târgu Jiu was founded in 1963 and owes its name to the Pandours . After 45 years of existence, the club was able to qualify for the first time in the 2004/05 season under coach Emil Săndoi as the leader of the Divizia B for the football club. After the club started with four defeats in the 2005/06 season , Săndoi was sacked in late August 2005 and replaced by Viorel Hizo . Even Nicolae Ungureanu , Hizo's successor from April 2006, could not improve the sporting situation significantly. Pandurii ended the season on the penultimate place in the table, but was allowed to remain in League 1 due to the withdrawal of Sportul Studențesc's license .
The new coach was Eugen Neagoe on June 10, 2006 , with whom 2006/07 was relegated and who stayed with Pandurii until he was resigned on December 9, 2007. After a league game under interim coach Gabriel Zahiu , the table penultimate announced on December 27, 2007 the conclusion of a contract for two and a half years with the Portuguese Joaquim Teixeira . After two defeats at the start of the second half of the season and the elimination in the Cupa României 2007/08 , Teixeira was released on March 3, 2008 and Eugen Neagoe was brought back as coach. With Neagoe again succeeded in relegation, but he was dismissed after a bad start to the 2008/09 season in September 2008 and replaced by Sorin Cârțu . After a placement in the middle of the final table Cârțu was replaced by Liviu Ciobotariu in October 2009 . In March 2010, Cârțu in turn replaced Ciobotariu himself, but was released on May 12, 2010, two game days before the end of the season. The previous assistant coach Florin Bejinariu looked after the team in the last two games of the season.
After the end of the 2009/10 season , Pandurii was relegated again and in June 2010 signed a new coach with Marius Baciu . In mid-July 2010, the sponsor of the better placed Internațional Curtea de Argeş withdrew, so that Pandurii could benefit from it and also signed the previous trainer and nine other Internațional players with Ionuț Badea . On October 1, 2010 Badea was dismissed at the bottom of the table and replaced two days later by Petre Grigoraş . The club has played its home games in Drobeta Turnu Severin since November 2010 after the Tudor Vladimirescu stadium was closed for renovation work.
The 2012/13 season was the most successful for Pandurii since her first division promotion. Pandurii was runner-up in Romania behind Steaua Bucharest. As a result, the Pandurs qualified for the Europa League for the first time in the 2013/14 season . Thanks to successes over FC Levadia Tallinn (Estonia), Hapoel Tel Aviv (Israel) and Sporting Braga (Portugal), they qualified for the group stage of the competition. In the group stage they finished last behind Fiorentina (Italy), Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine) and FC Paços de Ferreira (Portugal).
