The association founded by mathematician Traian Lalescu on February 11, 1916 for students is one of the oldest still active in Romania. The club plays its home games in the director's stadium with a capacity of 12,000 . The average attendance is around 2,000. The club's greatest successes are winning the Balkan Cup in 1979 and a second place in the Romanian league in 1986. Three times (1939, 1943 and 1979) the club failed in the final of the Romanian Cup. The club has not had much international success so far, the best result being reaching the third round of the 1987 UEFA Cup .

On April 30, 2007, the club separated from coach Gheorghe Mulțescu . In the 2010/11 season , the team played again in the House of Lords after four years in League II . During the first six game days she was coached by promotion coach Tibor Selymes , followed by Viorel Moldovan . After slipping to the bottom of the table, goalkeeping coach Florin Tene took over as coach before the 14th match day. After a two-month intermezzo from Gabriel Popescu , Vasile Șiman, the club's president and patron, brought Gheorghe Mulțescu back as head coach in mid-March 2011, but this change could not prevent his immediate relegation to the second division. The fact that Sportul Studențesc also played in League 1 in the following season 2011/12 despite his last place in the table , the club owed the subsequent license withdrawal of Gloria Bistrița and FC Timișoara .

After head coach Mulțescu had to be treated for kidney problems from the beginning of October 2011, assistant coach Daniel Timofte and goalkeeping coach Cătălin Mulțescu took over the training of the team. After the draw in the home game against FCM Târgu Mureş Gheorghe Mulțescu dissolved his contract on October 15, 2011. After two championship games in which the team had been coached by Daniel Timofte, Daniel Isăilă took over on November 4, 2011 as coach.

The club has been playing in the third Romanian soccer league, Liga III, since 2014 .
