Marius Ninel Șumudică (born March 4, 1971 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . As a striker , he played a total of 334 games in the Romanian Divizia A (now Liga 1 ), the Portuguese SuperLiga , the Hungarian Nemzeti Bajnokság and the Cypriot First Division .
Player career
Șumudică's career began in his hometown of Bucharest at Sportul Studențesc , where he began playing football at the age of seven and, in 1988, at the age of 17, was promoted to the first team that was then part of Divizia A (now Liga 1 ) played. On March 5, 1989 he came in the game against Inter Sibiu for his first use in the highest Romanian football league. From 1989 he was used regularly at Sportul, but - with the exception of the 1990/91 season - could not assert himself as a regular player for a longer period of time.
In 1992 Șumudică left Sportul and moved to league rivals Dacia Unirea Brăila , where he did not succeed either. After a short interlude at Corvinul Hunedoara , he returned to Sportul during the winter break in 1993/94 . In the following season he became a regular player and was able to prove his scoring qualities for the first time over a longer period of time.
While Șumudică mostly fought with Sportul to stay in class, he got the opportunity to move to a Romanian top club in 1996 when Rapid Bucharest signed. After he was only a supplement player in the first half of 1996/97 , he was loaned to Sportul for the second half . After returning to Rapid, he became a regular player and won the 1999 championship with his new club after the runner-up in 1998 , where he was able to contribute 17 hits as a strike partner of Ioan Viorel Ganea .
After this success Șumudică received an offer from abroad and moved to Marítimo Funchal in the Portuguese Primeira Liga . There he was used regularly, but was unable to prove his scoring threat as expected, so he returned to Rapid Bucharest in 2001. With Rapid he celebrated the cup victory in 2002 , but left the club again in the same year after falling out with coach Mircea Rednic . Șumudică moved to Hungary to Debreceni Vasutas SC . There he was named one of the most successful goalscorers of the Nemzeti Bajnokság and also the best foreign player in the league with 16 goals .
After a year and a half Șumudică left Hungary again and joined the Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia for six months . In the summer of 2004 he returned to Romania and initially played in Liga II at UTA Arad . At the beginning of November 2004 he terminated his contract there and ended his career in 2005 after a brief stint at Gloria Bistrița .
Coaching career
After the end of his active career Șumudică was initially active as the assistant coach of Răzvan Lucescu at his former club Rapid Bucharest , before he took over the second team there in 2005. After several short intervals with various teams in the League II , he became the coach of CSM Ploiesti in January 2009 . After the appointment of Ion Moldovan as technical director Șumudică dissolved his coaching contract on May 10, 2009. On July 6, 2009, he was introduced as Farul Constanța's new coach after signing a two-year contract. A first dismissal after the 1: 4 away defeat on October 3, 2009 against FC Botoșani was withdrawn shortly thereafter, but after the 0-1 defeat on November 14, 2009 at CSM Râmnicu Sărat Șumudică had to vacate his coaching chair at Farul.
In January 2010 he became the head coach of Gloria Bistrița in Liga 1 . After he had led the club to relegation, he took over the league rivals Rapid Bucharest at the beginning of the 2010/11 season . After the home defeat on the 29th match day against bottom of the table Sportul Studențesc Șumudică was dismissed on April 27, 2011. On July 13, 2011 he signed a contract as the head coach of AO Kavala in the Greek Super League . After the club was sentenced to relegation to the Football League shortly afterwards due to match-fixing in the preseason , Șumudică dissolved his contract again and was hired again on August 11, 2011 as head coach at Astra Ploiesti . After ten championship games, in which Astra was unbeaten, followed on October 27, 2011 from the Cupa României 2011/12 by a loss to local rivals Petrolul Ploieşti . Three days later, Șumudică was sacked because he had refused to follow the replacement instructions of the patron Ioan Niculae, which this had given in the half-time break of the championship game against Rapid Bucharest. On November 1, 2011, he replaced Daniel Isăilă as a coach at FC Brașov . After some disappointing results in the second half of the 2011/12 season , the club split on April 16, 2012 from Șumudică and signed the day after instead Ionu, Badea , who had resigned on March 13, 2012 at Universitatea Cluj . In summer 2012 he became head coach of FC Vaslui , but was replaced by Viorel Hizo in September 2012 .
In November 2012 Șumudică was interim coach for a game at Universitatea Cluj before he took over al-Shaab in the United Arab Emirates in December 2012 . In the 2012/13 season he and his team were able to stay in class. At the end of 2013, he dissolved his club lying in last place. In March 2014 he was signed by CS Concordia Chiajna . He led the club to relegation at the end of the 2013/14 season. He was fired in April 2015 after Concordia slipped to a relegation rank. A few weeks later he took over Astra Giurgiu as head coach. He won the championship in 2016 with Astra . In September 2016 he became an honorary citizen of Giurgiu .
On June 10, 2017 Șumudică was the coach of the Turkish first division club Kayserispor . In June 2018 he took over the coaching position at Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia .
In June 2019 he was introduced as the new coach of the Turkish first division club Gaziantep FK .
