The League 1 2015/16 was the 78th season of the highest Romanian football league . It started on July 10, 2015 and ended in May 2016.

The defending champion was Steaua Bucharest . The season was overshadowed by the death of Patrick Ekeng , who collapsed on the pitch on May 6, 2016 during the match between his club Dinamo Bucharest and FC Viitorul Constanța and died a little later.

mode

League 1 played with 14 teams, four teams less than in the previous season. A new mode has been introduced for this season. After a main round consisting of 26 game days, the league was divided into a championship round and a relegation round. The points scored were shared after the main round. Subject to the withdrawal of the license of other teams, the two last-placed teams will be relegated to League II , from which two teams will be promoted (the two first-placed teams from each of the two seasons). The twelfth of the table had to be relegated to remain in League 1.

There were three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams were tied at the end of the season, it was not the goal difference that decided , but the direct comparison.
