The Divizia A 1980/81 was the 43rd season in the history of the Romanian football league Divizia A. It began on August 2, 1980 and ended on June 21, 1981 . Games were closed from the beginning of December to the end of February ( winter break ).

Master again became Universitatea Craiova .

The 18 teams played against each other twice on 34 match days. The three last-place teams went into the Divizia B from. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams were tied at the end of the season, the goal difference decided .
