Jiul Petroșani is a Romanian football club from Petroșani that has been playing in Liga III , the third Romanian football league, since 2011 . He won the Romanian Cup in 1974.
history
Jiul Petroșani was founded in 1919 by Romanian miners as Clubul Atletic al Minerilor din Petroșani (Sports Association of Miners from Petroșani). After the name was changed to UCA ale Societatii Petroșani , it was given its current name in 1929. Jiul played in Divizia A a few times before World War II , but never lasted long.
After the Second World War, Jiul was immediately a member of Divizia A when the game was resumed in 1946. When the communists came to power in 1947, Jiul joined the miners' union, which it supported until 1990. In 1949 the name of the club was changed to Partizanul Petroşani , 1950 to Flacăra Petroşani , 1952 to Minerul Petroşani and 1956 to Energia Petroşani , before returning to its current name in 1957.
In the 1959/60 season Jiul had to relegate to Divizia B , but managed to get promoted again immediately. After relegation in 1962, the club did not become first class again until 1965.
At the beginning of the 1970s, Jiul experienced its most successful period. After losing the cup final in 1972 against Rapid Bucharest , Jiul only narrowly escaped relegation in the 1973/74 season , but was the Romanian cup winner in the final against Politehnica Timișoara . In the European Cup Winners' Cup , however, it was the last stop in the first round against Dundee United .
The cup win was followed by many years of relegation battle before Jiul was relegated to Divizia B in 1985. In the following years, Jiul became the elevator team , before not being able to rise again immediately after relegation in 1991. After an intermezzo from 1996 to 1998 in Divizia A, she did not return until 2005. In the 2006/07 season Jiul rose again from League II . In May 2008, coach Gheorghe Poenaru dissolved his contract and Haralambie Antohi , the previous coach of the second team, took his place. In September 2008, Antohi was dismissed after the fourth day of the League II 2008/09 and replaced by Daniel Timofte . Timofte stayed until November 2009 and Jiul was excluded from the second division championship during the winter break of the 2009/10 season after player salaries in the amount of 150,000 euros could no longer be paid.
The 2010/11 season played the club in League IV , as he had not received a license for League III . On December 6, 2010, the coach Toni Sedecaru was replaced by a coaching duo that consisted of Daniel Huza , a former first division player from Jiul and Farul Constanța , and Damian Militaru. At the end of the season, Jiul won the season of the Hunedoara district , but lost in the relegation game for promotion to League III against CS Flacăra Făget , the representative of the Timiș district , with 0-1. In order to be able to play in League III in the 2011/12 season, the club officials submitted a request to the Romanian Football Association , which was granted on August 15, 2011 after ACU Arad was excluded . On September 5, 2011 Marin Tudorache replaced the previous coach Huza, who had only won one point in the first three league games and now took over Jiul's second team from League IV.
