Larissa Ivanovna Arap

Larissa Ivanovna Arap ( Russian Лариса Ивановна Арап , * 1958 ) is a Russian journalist and civil rights activist . Arap became known, among other things, for her reports of abuse of psychiatric facilities in Russia, which resulted in her being subjected to coercive treatment herself.

Imprisonment

On July 5, 2007, Larissa Arap visited the Severomorsk district clinic because she needed a document for her driver's license . A doctor who recognized the author of the critical article in the visitor immediately notified the militia . Larissa Arap was forcibly taken to the psychiatric clinic.

On July 24, Larissa Arap was transferred to the psychiatric clinic in the neighboring town of Apatity in Murmansk Oblast . This clinic, which treats the severely mentally ill, is known to have few patients ever discharged. Meanwhile, supporters of the United Citizens Front in Murmansk tried to set up an independent commission to investigate the Arap case. International organizations also intervened. The journalist was released from psychiatry at the end of August.
