Apatity ( Russian Апати́ты , Finnish Apatiitti ) is a Russian city in Murmansk Oblast . With 59,672 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) it is the second largest city in the oblast.
Geographical location
Apatity is located on the Kola Peninsula between Lake Imandra , the largest lake in Murmansk Oblast, and the Chibinen .
history
The place was created in 1935 in connection with the development of the apatite - nepheline deposits in the nearby Chibinen . The place name is derived from the name of the mineral apatite. In 1966 city rights were granted.

traffic
The train station of Apatity is located on the Murmansk railway from Saint Petersburg to Murmansk . Here the Kolabahn branches off , a never completed railway project, from which 13 km to Titan are still operated today.
The connection from the air takes place via the Kirovsk / Apatity airport , which is located between the cities of Kirovsk and Apatity.
Apatity can also be reached via Road 1378.
