The Chibinen ( Russian Хибины ) are an almost circular mountain range about 45 km in diameter on the Kola Peninsula in Russia . They represent an intrusion that formed around 362 million years ago in the archaic basement of the peninsula. It is the world's largest alkali pluton , which also has an extraordinary variety of minerals . The highest elevation of the mountains is the Judytschwumtschorr (all peaks have Sami names) at 1201  m above sea level. Due to the northern location, the tree line is already 400  m here , followed by the tundra and finally a polar stone desert, which is known as the frost rubble desert .

The mining town of Kirovsk is located on the southern edge of the Chibinen , and there is also a small ski area. Here mainly apatite is mined for fertilizer production.

The Chibinen are known for their almost untouched nature, for example at the Umbosero (a lake the size of Lake Constance without permanent settlements on its shores). There is also infrastructure for campers here and at the various lakes, for example at Kuelporr , which can be reached by road from Kirovsk, but in summer mostly only with an off-road vehicle. The town of Apatity in the vicinity of Kirovsk is on the railway line from Saint Petersburg to Murmansk ( Murmanbahn ) (about 160 km south of the port city), from where Kirovsk can be reached by public bus.
