Murmansk railway station

The Murman Railway is a railway line in northern Russia .

Geographical location

The Murman Railway runs from Saint Petersburg via Murmansk to Severomorsk . The line branching off from it in Kola, shortly before Murmansk, to Petschenga and Nikel is (apart from the island operation ore railway Kirkenes – Bjørnevatn ) the northernmost railway line in Europe.

Technical parameters

The route length is 1448 kilometers in the Russian broad gauge of 1525 mm.

history

The Murman Railway was built during the First World War , between 1915 and 1917, in order to be able to supply the army of the Russian Empire all year round with armaments from their western allies Great Britain and France . Because of the time pressure, the route was laid out with as little effort as possible. In addition to Russian workers, around 60,000 Austro-Hungarian and German prisoners of war were used, of which around 25,000 perished during the construction.

During the Second World War , the railway was again of great strategic importance, as it was used to transport the goods of the northern sea convoys inland and to the front (see also Loan and Lease Act ). As a result, German air strikes from the Petsamo base by the so-called Eismeerjäger ( Jagdgeschwader 5 ) and commando companies by the Brandenburg special unit on the Murman Railway, which was heavily defended by flak , took place, largely in vain .

business

The Murmanbahn is operated by the Oktoberbahn . It is of great economic importance because Murmansk (together with a few neighboring bays) is the only year-round ice-free port in northwestern Russia and from there goods can be transported by rail to central regions of European Russia .

On June 1, 2020, the bridge built in 1930 over the Kola River , which is located 15 kilometers south of Murmansk, collapsed . Replacement rail services were set up between Murmansk and Vykhodnoj. For freight traffic, a diversion route to the Murmashi port, southwest of Murmansk, was opened on June 19 . Since June 24th, individual passenger trains have been running this route to Murmansk again. In October 2020, the new bridge to be built with a larger span of 110 meters should be able to be used on the previous route so that rail replacement traffic can be discontinued.

future

From the train station Wychodnoj one is branching path to Lawna built from there Siberian coal export.

The section from Olenegorsk to Murmansk is to be expanded to two tracks by 2022.
