The Kolabahn ( Russian Кольская железная дорога / Kolskaja schelesnaja doroga ) is an unfinished Soviet railway project in the Murmansk Oblast in Russia .

history

The Kolabahn was to connect two planned Soviet naval bases on the east coast of the Kola Peninsula with the rail network of the Soviet railways . The planned route led from Apatity via Keiwy to Ponoi and would have had a length of about 300 km. A branch to Ostrownoi was also planned.

Most of the construction was carried out by prisoners from the Soviet gulag . For this purpose, a penal camp was set up west of Apatity (near Titan ) at the end of 1951 , in which up to 4,900 prisoners were held, who were later distributed to seven other camps along the route. A good year after the start of construction, 110 km of rails had been laid and a further 10 km of route completed. After Stalin's death in 1953, construction work was stopped and the project was abandoned. The tracks were dismantled again on a large, already completed section of the route.

business

Only a short section from Apatity to Titan or the branch to Kirovsk is still in operation today . The branch line to Kirovsk is now operated by the local mining company. The line from Titan to Rewda , which was previously also used as a works railway by a mining company, has been closed since 2007 due to the company's insolvency.
