The Ponoi ( Russian Поной , formerly Trianæma ) is a 426 km long river in the east of the Kola Peninsula in Murmansk Oblast in Russia . Its catchment area covers 15,500 km².

geography

The source of the Ponoi is in the southwest of the Keiwy Highlands , about 50 km east of Lake Lowosero in the center of the Kola Peninsula. The river flows through a landscape of hills and swampy plains in an easterly direction. The Ponoi takes in the water of several tributaries coming from the north, the largest of these is the Ascherjok .

Below the confluence of the Purnatsch in the Ponoi, about 50 km from the sea, the Ponoi river changes its character. It now flows through ravines and forms rapids. Finally it reaches its mouth in the White Sea south of Cape Korabelni in the far east of Kola.

The river freezes between late October and early November, and remains frozen until the first half of May.

fauna

The river is rich in Atlantic salmon ( salmo salar ). It is very popular with European fishing tourists.
