The Imandra ( Russian Имандра , Finnish Imantero ) is a lake in the southwestern part of the peninsula Kola in the Murmansk Oblast in Russia , beyond the Arctic Circle . The water level is 126.7 m above sea level; its area is 812 km², the maximum depth is 67 m. The shape of its shoreline is complicated. There are a number of islands, the largest island is Jerm (26 km²). The three main parts of the lake are connected by narrow waterways:

  • Chibinskaja Imandra ( Большая Имандра , "Great Imandra") in the north (328 km², about 55 km long, 3–5 km wide)
  • Jekostrowskaja Imandra in a central location (351 km²)
  • Babinskaja Imandra in the west (133 km²).

The lake is drained by the Niwa River to Kandalaksha Bay ( White Sea ).

Energy generation

The lake's water level has been regulated since 1952 and the water used to generate energy. There are 3 hydropower plants along the Niwa, which use the hydraulic potential . The western Pirengskoje reservoir , which flows over the Pirenga into the Imandra, is used to regulate the water level.

The Kola Nuclear Power Plant is located on Imandra near its drain. It has been in operation since 1973.

Imandra is known for its clear water and abundance of fish. The city of Montschegorsk , located on the Montscheguba Bay in the north-west of the lake, is a winter sports center. Apatity is near the east bank of the lake. Polyarnye Zori is located on the Niwa River a few kilometers from its outflow from the Imandra.
