Location of Kandalaksha Bay in the White Sea

The Kandalakscha Bay ( Russian Кандалакшский залив , Finnish Kantalahti , literal meaning: "The Gulf of the Kanda River") is the northwestern tip of the White Sea .

It is one of the four large bays of the White Sea. It borders the Republic of Karelia and the Murmansk Oblast in northwest Russia . The Kola Peninsula is north of Kandalaksha Bay.

There are hundreds of small islands in the bay. At its western end, Kandalaksha Bay reaches a depth of 300 m, while the inner part of the bay is shallow.

The largest islands in Kandalaksha Bay are: Ryashkov, Oleni, Wolei, Veliki, Sidorow, Keret and Peschostrow.

Tributaries into the bay are: Umba , Pila , Porja , Kolwiza , Luwenga , Niwa , Luptsche-Sawino , Kanda , Kowda and Keret .

The city of Kandalaksha is at the northern end of the bay; the new Witino oil port about 10 km south of it.

The Kandalakscha Nature Reserve ( Russian Кандалакшский заповедник ) includes parts of the coastline of the bay and many of the islands in the bay. These form an important breeding area for eider ducks and other sea birds.
