The Niwa ( Russian Нива , North Sami : Njavejohka ) is a river in Murmansk Oblast in Russia .
Its length is 36 km and its catchment area is 12,830 km². The mean discharge 15 km above the mouth is 164 m³ / s. The Niwa forms the outflow of Lake Imandra to Kandalaksha Bay , the northwest part of the White Sea . The river flows from north to south. It flows through Lake Pinosero ( ⊙ ). The city of Kandalaksha is located on the estuary of the river.
Use of hydropower
Between 1936 and 1954 three hydropower plants were built along the Niwa. Their total output is 240 MW , the annual output 1,390 GWh . They are operated by TGC-1 .
