The Pechenga ( Russian Печенга ; Finnish Petsamo ; Norwegian Petsjenga ; North Sami Beahcán ; Skoltsam. Peäccam ) is a river that runs in the northwest of the Kola Peninsula (in Murmansk Oblast in Russia ).
geography
The river is 101 km long and drains an area of 1820 km². The Pechenga has its origin in Lake Mometjauri . It flows in a northeasterly direction and flows into the Petschenga Fjord at the port of Petschenga , a narrow bay in the Barents Sea west of the fishing peninsula a few kilometers from the Norwegian border. The largest tributaries are Namajoki and Little Pechenga (Малая Печенга). It flows through the lakes Pijedsjaur ( ⊙ ), Kijedgjaur ( ⊙ ), Ruosseljaur ( ⊙ ) and Kallojaur ( ⊙ ). On the bank of the river is the Pechenga monastery . The river is heavily polluted with heavy metals due to the mining of mineral resources in its catchment area.
Hydrometry
The discharge of the Petschenga was recorded over a period of 36 years (1957–1992) at Petschenga, 8 km from the confluence with the Barents Sea. The mean annual discharge was 23.4 m³ / s. The lowest discharge was measured in March with 5.48 m³ / s, while the highest discharge was observed in May with 73 m³ / s. The lowest monthly discharge in the above period occurred in March 1985 with 3.00 m³ / s, the highest monthly discharge with 155 m³ / s in May 1963.
