Life

Künneth, the son of a grammar school teacher, studied mathematics at the University of Erlangen and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1910 , interrupted from military service with the infantry in the First World War from 1914 to 1919, where he was wounded twice and was most recently in British captivity. During his studies he became a member of the AMV Fridericiana Erlangen . In 1912 he passed the first state examination for teachers, which was followed by the second part in 1920. His teachers in Erlangen were Ernst Sigismund Fischer , Paul Gordan , Max Noether , Richard Baldus , Erhard Schmidt . From 1920 he was a teacher in the Bavarian school service, among others at grammar schools in Kronach and Erlangen . At the same time he kept in contact with the university, received his doctorate in Erlangen (where he was an assistant at the university in 1921) under Heinrich Tietze ( On the Bettische Numbers of a Product Manifold ), was an assistant at the University of Berlin in 1923 (but became a lecturer at the Realschule Kronach) and completed his habilitation in Erlangen in 1942. In addition to his school work, he was then a private lecturer. In 1925 he became a teacher at the Fridericianum in Erlangen and in 1950 a senior teacher. After retiring from school he was an adjunct professor in Erlangen from 1957, where, according to Otto Haupt, at the age of 65 he developed an astonishing, unexpected scientific activity .

He is known for the Künneth formula in algebraic topology, which he developed in his dissertation. It enables the Betti numbers of a product variety A x B to be determined from the Betti numbers of A and B. He also gave formulas for the torsion numbers of the product variety . Later he dealt with geometry , partly in collaboration with Otto Haupt , which resulted in a monograph.
